Found a mistake in a word, a bug, or have an idea? Email hello@kanametro.com — every message is read. If you spot a Japanese mistake, include the word and the station code (like K05) so it can be fixed quickly.
Where should I start?
Katakana (カタカナ) is the fastest start: it's used for words borrowed from other languages, so you understand them as soon as you can read them. Hiragana and kanji are their own networks, and you can switch any time from the map.
How do I open the Transfer line (のりかえ)?
Finish one katakana lesson and one hiragana lesson. After that, each transfer station opens on its own as soon as you know every character its phrases use.
How do I defeat a kaiju, yōkai or ninja?
Each one guards the last station of a line. Answer 10 of 12 review questions before you lose your 3 shields. If it wins, review the line and try again — you keep all your progress.
"Read the World" doesn't find any words
Use a sharp, well-lit photo where the text is fairly large, like a menu or sign. It finds words from the course; words that use characters you haven't learned yet appear in orange, with the station that teaches them.
"Say it" doesn't hear me
Check that Kana Metro is allowed to use the microphone and speech recognition (Settings → Kana Metro). Speech recognition may need an internet connection. You can always tap "Pick the sound" instead.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, automatically, on your iPhone. It's included in your iPhone's backups, so it comes along when you move to a new phone from a backup. Deleting the app deletes your progress.
Is it really free?
Yes. No ads, no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, no account.
